Terms of use

Gaelic Football Guide explains the game for general information. The official rules are the GAA's own, published in the GAA Official Guide, and they take priority over anything on this site. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Gaelic Athletic Association.

What this site is

This is an independent reference website about Gaelic football. It explains the rules, scoring, positions, pitch and match length in plain English, for readers who want to understand or follow the game. By using the site you agree to these terms.

Accuracy and the official rules

We check every rule and number against the GAA's publications and show the date of that check on each page. Rules change, though, sometimes during a season, and a summary can never cover every exception.

For any official purpose, such as refereeing a match, settling a dispute, preparing a team or making a disciplinary decision, rely on the current GAA Official Guide and on your county or competition regulations, not on this site. We provide the site as it is, without any guarantee that it is complete or up to date, and we are not responsible for decisions made on the basis of it.

If you spot an error, please tell us; we correct mistakes as quickly as we can.

Not affiliated with the GAA

Gaelic Football Guide is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by the Gaelic Athletic Association or any of its units, and nothing on this site speaks for the GAA. The words "Gaelic football" in our name describe the sport we write about.

The GAA's name, crest and competition names belong to the GAA. We use them only to refer to the organisation and its competitions.

Our content

The text, tables and diagrams on this site are our own work and are protected by copyright. You are welcome to:

  • quote short passages with a link to the page they come from;
  • print or download the pitch diagram and use it for coaching, teaching or club purposes, provided you keep the credit on it or link back to the pitch page.

Please do not republish whole pages or diagrams elsewhere, or use them commercially, without asking us first. Quotations from the GAA's rules remain the GAA's.

We link to the GAA and to other sources so you can check what we say. We are not responsible for the content of those sites, which can change without our knowledge.
